THE ADVENTURE COLLECTIVE

A little world.
A bigger adventure.

An early exploration of a more playful way to discover the outdoors. Real places, viewed from a different angle.

01

The landscape

Mapzen elevation data shapes the terrain. Esri World Imagery is draped over the surface as it loads.

02

The little details

OSM and Mapbox footprints become 3D buildings. Downtown Asheville and Lower Manhattan use full-detail Mapbox pilots with source heights; other areas use OSM heights where available and estimates elsewhere. Trees are procedural, guided by imagery color.

Buildings with source heights—

OSM roads and footprints stream as you move. Downtown Asheville and Lower Manhattan buildings upgrade to full-detail Mapbox Streets data when available; OSM remains the fallback. Building heights keep their proportions when terrain is exaggerated. At wider zoom levels, buildings give way to a lighter terrain view. Missing building heights and all individual trees are simulated; tree placement uses a simple image-color heuristic, not object detection. This is not a photogrammetry reconstruction.

Mapped sandy beaches blend into the terrain. Waves, beach visitors and boats are illustrative, not live crowds, ocean conditions or access guidance. Occasional whales appear in broad California and Hawaii regions, not at reported sightings. They keep a simulated separation from water visitors; this is not wildlife-viewing or legal guidance. Water uses a simple dark-blue surface and lightweight waves, without reflection effects or geometric swells. Animated activities load and run only in close views. Phones default to no shadow or tilt passes and a 30 fps cap; sustained slow frames lower resolution further. Shore slopes are visual approximations from coarse elevation and OSM footprints.

Satellite imagery loads directly from the provider. A cartographic fallback remains visible where tiles are unavailable.
